Art prints & frames, handmade in England since 1982

We want you to enjoy your art for years to come, which is why our team of skilled framers create a custom frame for every print.

Not only does the frame protect your artwork, it can also enhance the image itself – by choosing a particular finish, you can complement the colours, subject and style of the work of art within. Here, we’ve outlined the elements that go into making a custom frame to help you choose the perfect finish.

Frame mouldings

Set the scene with the frame moulding – choosing the right style and size moulding will show off the art, especially when you consider your own interior décor as well. Our experienced design team has curated a collection of high quality, solid-wood frame mouldings to suit all art styles. All of our wooden mouldings are sourced with care to ensure the timber is of a recognised origin and we often deal directly with the mill, to further ensure quality and traceability back to the forest source.

Picture Mounts

Mounts create a gap between the artwork and the glazing which helps prevent damage from condensation or high-gloss prints sticking to the glass. We only use acid-free mount-board, which eliminates the risk of burn – staining of the print due to contaminants leeching from the board. Our mounts are also white-core, which means the cut bevel-edge nearest the print remains crisp and white; lesser quality boards quickly discolour.

The glazing plays a vital role in protecting your artwork from scratches, dirt and dust. At King & McGaw you can choose between glass or Perspex, both of which are incredibly high quality and ensure immaculate clarity and colour accuracy.

Backing board

To ensure your artwork retains its looks over time, it is bonded to an acid-free backing board (except if it is a limited edition). This prevents the print from wrinkling and from slumping within the frame. To finish off, we add a rigid backing board, which is secured and then all joints taped. This prevents the ingress of dust and any troublesome insects, as well as adding rigidity to the frame so it’s ready for hanging.

Quality production

Each frame is cut, joined and assembled by hand before being signed on the reverse by the framer who created it. We value quality above all else so the whole process is overseen by our Master Framer who ensures standards are maintained every step of the way, and also signs the finished frame. Each frame come with hanging fittings and a picture hook, ready to hang.
