Sir Howard Hodgkin

King & McGaw is delighted to have published a new silkscreen limited edition Concert by Howard Hodgkin, one of Britain’s most celebrated painters. Originally painted in 2003 for a Piano Competition in the US, this seminal work remains in the Hodgkin Archives but was accessible for our master printers to create this silkscreen edition in 22 colours.

Concert is embossed (H.H) bottom right, numbered bottom left in pencil and printed on 410gsm Somerset white satin cotton paper with torn edges. Each print is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity, signed by the two estate executors and King & McGaw. Take a closer look…

Sir Howard Hodgkin (1932-2017) was one of Britain's greatest colourists and contemporary painters. In 1984, he represented Great Britain in the Venice Biennale and won the prestigious Turner Prize in 1985. Known for using saturated colours and expressive brush strokes, he painted directly onto the back of old picture frames or salvaged wood - therefore blurring the traditional distinction between object and image. These works, which look spontaneous, were in fact the products of two or three years' effort.

"Mr Over is dead. He died fighting and true. And on his tombstone they wrote Over To You." Stevie Smith

This edition of Over to you has been created from one of the last paintings Hodgkin painted in India before he died. The naming was prophetic and its apparent pure simplicity belies the complexity within. It required the application of 34 colours to create this extraordinary work.

In a French Restaurant is a vintage silkscreen poster designed by Howard Hodgkin for his exhibition at Knoedler Gallery, New York in 1980. Published by Petersburg Press in a signed edition of 500, this poster reproduces the eponymous oil painting to the same size as the painting itself.
