Crabs and lobsters are part of the crustacean family and within visual culture, are symbolic of change, cycles, trust, protection and transformation. Lobsters are perceived as luxury food today, however they symbolised poverty before the 20th century as their shape resembles an insect. In fact, the word lobster derives from the Latin word for locust. Some famous depictions include Dali's Lobster telephone as well as Sebastian from Disney's Little Mermaid.
