Nighthawks constitutes one of the most recognisable images in modern art. Showing four characters brightly illuminated by the harsh artificial light of a New York diner, the work is a bleak depiction of urban life. The huge windows pour light onto the street, but rather than appear welcoming the diner looks like a hostile environment, exposing the diners; our attention drawn to them even as their hunched appearances shun it. With the nighthawks inside all seemingly trapped in a room with no visible exit the image invites interpretations that point toward loneliness and despair, with the work becoming synonymous with a very modern sense of detachment.
