Art prints & frames, handmade in England since 1982
Born in Portsmouth, England in 1969, artist Laurie Maitland spent her childhood years in the stunning scenery of the Cotswolds before moving to London. With her specialism in set design during her English and Drama studies at Kingston University, Maitland then went on to pursue a career as a teacher.
However, Maitland never stopped painting, creating little gems of masterpieces in her spare time. In 1996, she had her first professional showcase at Bournemouth in an outdoor exhibition, which was remarkably successful. Laurie Maitland subsequently sold her work through various galleries within the UK and, gripped by an entrepreneurial spirit, started owning and running three art galleries, a furniture design company and a fine art publishing enterprise. Due to her successful art career, however, Maitland stopped teaching and sold off all her businesses to concentrate on her first love of painting.
Maitland's paintings are characterised by abstract blurry squares in smoky shades of maroon, yellow and grey, overlaid with graphic splattered lines or a translucent layer of floral motifs. The compositions bring to mind the work of Mark Rothko but with a feminine slant. Her love of nature and keen interest in interior design has a great influence on her work with some of her most famous pieces hinting at the colours of changing seasons.
Distributed worldwide, Maitland's paintings are highly sought-after. The talented artist currently resides in Devon where she continues to work on her art and design, whilst working on her first novel.
