Petersburg Press

Petersburg Press was founded in London in 1967 by Paul Cornwall-Jones and published limited edition prints and de luxe books by artists including Jim Dine, Richard Hamilton, David Hockney, Howard Hodgkin, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, James Rosenquist, Dieter Roth and Frank Stella. Through the years Petersburg Press organised many exhibitions and the artists were integral in designing the posters, choosing typeface, layout and sometimes adding original drawing into the design. There was no standard size: each poster was designed to suit the image. Unlike most posters these were printed in 6-8 colours to ensure a richness of pigment; and they were not printed on flimsy poster stock but on high quality paper. A highlight of Petersburg’s poster publications were the large scale silkscreen posters of the 1980’s of Hockney, Hodgkin and Lichtenstein. Petersburg’s archive also includes posters produced by museums exhibiting artists represented by Petersburg Press.
