Willem de Kooning (1904-1997) was an American-Dutch artist, who was influential in forming the Abstract Expressionist movement of the 1940s. His gestural works are highly distinctive, painted with large brushes and smooth paints reminiscent of his early career as a house painter. De Kooning developed a unique style that merged abstraction with traditional subjects; women were often present in his paintings, and in later life he turned to landscapes.
