Amedeo Clemente Modigliani (1884-1920) was an Italian Jewish painter and sculptor who worked mainly in France. He is known for portraits and nudes in a modern style characterized by elongation of faces and figures.
His paintings were not received well during his lifetime, but later found acceptance. 'Nu couché' realized £113 million at Christie's in New York on 9 November 2015, a record for a Modigliani, making it one of the most expensive paintings ever sold.
This is understated and elegant; it looks classy in our sitting room. I agonised over whether I should have got a larger one but in the end decided to keep what I had ordered. Very pleased with the result.
