Born in Paris, Édouard Manet (1832 - 1883) connected with the Impressionist movement from its fledgling days but his early paintings 'Le Déjeuner sur l'Herbe' and 'Olympia' are regarded as his most significant works, marking the genesis of modern art. In these paintings female nudes stare directly at the viewer, which was at once shocking and groundbreaking to Manet's contemporaries.
