Helen Frankenthaler (1928-2011), whose career flourished for six decades, was one of the great American artists of the twentieth century. She developed an innovative method of staining canvas with thin washes of paint that expanded the possibilities of abstract painting. Frankenthaler's ephemeral yet vivid works are widely noted as a crucial influence in the transition from Abstract Expressionism to Colour Field painting.
