‘Jack Vettriano's work is of course very well known, some would say to the point of being ubiquitous. 'The Drifter' however, is probably a somewhat lesser-seen example of his output. The enigmatic quality that is present in so many of his paintings shines through here too. Who is this faceless individual, walking into the distance, along the foreshore. What is his backstory and where is he heading ?.
I find the subtle tones of soft browns and greys used in this composition particularly pleasing and evocative, maybe an Autumn Sun, referencing the autumn days of this Drifters life ?.’
