The Great Wave at Kanagawa

Art print by Katsushika Hokusai #429946

About the artist

Born in 1760 in Edo (modern day Tokyo) to a family of artisans, Hokusai began painting at the age of six. He faced constant challenges in his career including perpetual lack of funds, government censorship and a fire that destroyed his studio. Despite this, Hokusai became one of the greatest Japanese painters of all time. Hokusai has endowed the world with some of the most arresting, evocative and historically crucial depictions of landscape and nature, including his famous woodcuts of Mount Fuji and The Great Wave of Kanagawa.
