‘It is a fascinating yet curiously grotesque depiction of a perceived underclass who at the time were largely forgotten and dismissed by society. The front central male figure appears to speak to the viewer and seems to be pleading for help while the children appear to display their innocence of the despair surrounding them without appearing to be deliberately malicious in there attitudes. The fact that they are grouped together intensifies their isolation from society which is added to by the industrial working background of which they appear to be excluded. The church in the back ground suggests some degree of help and sanctuary.’
