Frederick Leighton (1830 - 1896) was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire. He became the leader of the Victorian Neo-Classical movement and his paintings of Hellenic subjects are his most loved. In 1885 his first picture for the Royal Academy was bought personally by Queen Victoria and thus his long and illustrious career was launched. When commencing a Classical work Leighton made preliminary studies of each figure, both nude and draped.
His work is so prestigious that even these sketches are now extremely valuable. Our collection includes his most iconic and sensuous work.
