Andy Barker completed an art foundation course in 1978, and a BA (Hons) degree in Fine art in 1990. In 1995, he began working as studio assistant for Howard Hodgkin in his London and Normandy studios, and later, in addition, in his studio in Mumbai during the UK’s winter months. This continued until Howard’s death in 2017. Barker’s own work has been shown in various group shows, including The Whitworth Young Contemporaries at the Whitworth Art Gallery in 1989, EAST, at the Norwich Gallery in 1991, The Discerning Eye at The Mall Galleries in 2001, 2010 and 2020, and the John Moores Painting Prize 2018, at the Walker Art Gallery. His most recent one-man show was “In a Hot Country”, based on multiple visits to Brazil and India, at Zuleika Gallery, London in 2019, where he remains a gallery artist.
