Born in 1848, he entered the Royal Academy School in 1872, and exhibited at the leading London galleries, including the Royal Society of Painters in Water-colours and the Royal Academy. He was then elected a member of the Royal Society of Painters in Water-colours in 1896.
He painted several sporting subjects including Henley Royal Regatta (1891) and a portrait of H.F. Lawford and W. Renshaw playing golf. In 1893 he painted 'A Lesson in Lawn Bowls'.
Arthur Hopkins was the brother of Gerard Manley Hopkins, a poet and entertainer, and of Everard Hopkins (1860-1928), who was a watercolorist and illustrator.
He died in 1930.
