Cy Twombly (1928-2011) was a prolific American painter in the same generation as Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg. Living and working in his chosen home of Rome, Twombly developed a highly unique style of painting in response to the Greco-Roman past of his surroundings. Written word and graffiti served as the foundation of his abstract works, often inspired by the process of handwriting. Twombly has remained one of the most enigmatic artists of his time by resisting association with any single art movement.
