Famed painter and printmaker, Edvard Munch is best known for his free-flowing and emotionally fraught, expressionist paintings.
Born in Norway in 1863, Munch grew up in Oslo but much of his early life was overshadowed by personal tragedies, illness and failures. From this though, creativity was born: "without anxiety and illness, I am a ship without a rudder....My sufferings are part of my self and my art," wrote Munch.
His works are intensely evocative, in particular his Frieze of Life series which encompass themes of love, death and jealousy - including one of the most famous paintings in art history, 'The Scream'. While his emotions lay bare to the world, Munch's works are some of the most powerful examples of 19th Century Symbolism, and he remains a pioneer of expressionism in painting to this day.
