Frogs and amphibians have been depicted within visual culture as a symbol of fertility, birth and transformation due to their ability to lay enormous quantities of eggs and the unique growth cycle from tadpole to full adulthood. In folklore and fairy tales, frogs are portrayed as benign, ugly and clumsy but with hidden talents, the most famous one transforms himself into a handsome prince once kissed! These amphibians were also seen as a symbol of the devil by the Catholic Church in medieval Europe, dues to its association with witches' concoctions.
