Nicolas de Staël Art Prints

Russian born Nicolas de Stael left Russia as an infant after the Bolshevik revolution of 1917 forced his high ranking military father out. De Stael never settled but spent several periods in Paris and the gathering artistic movements that formed in the city can clearly be seen to be influencing his work. The artist’s turn to abstraction saw him enjoy success, with a one man show in Paris and consistent sales, as he independently anticipated the style of painting which would come to dominate the 1950s art world. Unfortunately for de Stael success did not avail bouts of acute depression. In 1955 he killed himself after an unfortunate meeting with an art critic who, it would appear, held his work in rather low esteem.
