About the artist

Tamara de Lempicka was born Maria Gorska to well-to-do parents in turn-of-the-century Poland, but it was not until she fled to Paris with her husband Tadeusz de Lempicka, that the story of Lempicka really begins.

Not only the most fashionable portrait painter of her generation among the haute bourgeoisie and aristocracy, Lempicka was a glamour icon in her own right. Friends with Picasso, Jean Cocteau and Greta Garbo, Lempicka became known for her distinctive painting style, which emulated the sensual side of the French Art Deco movement.

She wrote: "among a hundred paintings, you could recognise mine, my goal was: Do not copy. Create a new style...colours light and bright, return to elegance in my models." Her frenetic social life was riddled with scandalous affairs and her later life saw her relocate to New York, before finally residing in a beautiful house in Mexico. What remains is the legacy of revolutionary woman and a revelation in the art world. These captivating portraits make a stunning addition to any interior space.
