Projekt 26: Sylwia shares what she loves most about our latest release of Polish posters

Sylwia’s passion for the posters of Soviet Poland has offered her a direct connection to her own Polish roots, and led her to preserve and share these unique artworks as a proud custodian of Polish design heritage.

Working closely with the families of the artists who belonged to the Polish School of Posters, Projekt 26 authentically print limited run reproductions of these beautiful, timeless artworks. Here Sylwia shares what she loves most about the latest prints to join our collection.

The Parisienne, Visit the Zoo – Flamingos, and Warsaw Autumn, by Waldemar Swierzy

This collection of iconic posters by Waldemar Swierzy perfectly captures the artist’s unique and vibrant use of imagery, humour, and colour. I deeply admire Swierzy, and the legacy that he left to this medium. I even own a car that was once owned by Swierzy himself! The piece entitled Warsaw Autumn is currently reprinted by the artist’s grandson in close collaboration with Projekt 26, to authentically preserve and honour his grandfather’s legacy.

Circus Cycling, Hubert Hilscher

This poster was originally designed in 1970 and is one of the best examples of Hubert Hilscher’s work, the vibrant colours and satirical humour being hallmarks. Hilscher himself was drawn to architectural forms (having studied for the construction trades when in school), and this is reflected in his use of geometric shapes and patterns in his designs. I love this artist for his instantly recognisable pieces and his creativity.

Citizen Kane, Henryk Tomaszewski

This is an iconic poster marking the 1948 Polish release of the equally iconic film, Citizen Kane. The collage style was innovative and bold at the time and remains just as beautiful and impactful today. It is considered to be a pioneering work of the Polish School of Posters and rightly justifies Henryk Tomaszewski’s reputation as the ‘founding father’ of the movement that followed in the latter half of the 20th century.
