We’re passionate about the variety of artwork we hold in our collection, there’s truly art for everyone. Our team is no exception when it comes to their dynamic tastes in art. Here’s our latest roundup of our Team Print of the Month series, featuring historic and contemporary pieces, and a little about why our team loves them so much.
My favourite artwork in our collection is by Hilma af Klint, a Swedish artist and spiritualist whose colossal works have become known as some of the first examples of abstract art. What I really love about Klint’s work is how she was inspired to create these paintings, how they were initially discovered, and despite the discrimination she faced as a woman in the art world at the time, she still managed to create so many innovative artworks.
This piece titled, The Ten Largest, No. 7, Adulthood, is part of a series called The Ten Largest for ‘The Temple’. Each painting in the series represents a different phase of life from early childhood to old age, with No. 7, depicting adulthood in full bloom – Amy, Creative Content Producer at King & McGaw
I have chosen this framed edition by Ambrosine Allen, a collage artist who creates her original works from tiny pieces of paper trimmed from discarded books. I love the intricacy and level of detail which she achieves in her work.
In this framed edition, we build up the artwork from four laser-cut layers, spaced apart to give a three-dimensional effect that captures the artist’s technique and produces an artwork that appears to float within the frame.
When I look at the finished picture, I am inspired by the creativity of the artist and her dedication to perfection, and the image gives me a feeling of space and freedom. I’m proud to have been involved in the making of such a truly unique piece – Doug, Specialist Framer at King & McGaw
One of my favourite pieces is Vanessa Bell by Duncan Grant, painted in the studio at Charleston Farmhouse, which is just down the road from us here in Sussex. The painting is an intimate portrayal of two artists, friends, and partners.
For the last few years I have been very inspired by Bell and Grant’s lifelong dedication to the arts and the way it intertwines with everyday life. This painting, while just an insight into their shared life, I feel truly captures the essence of Charleston.
Grant’s use of colour with the soft, muted tones, and visible brushstrokes depict the very atmosphere of Charleston which is decorated throughout every corner by Bell and the other members of the Bloomsbury group. This is one of my favourite paintings for its aesthetic qualities as well as the lives, stories and places it represents – Gracie, Design Coordinator at King & McGaw
My favourite print in our collection is ‘Island in Maine’ by Tom Hammick, a fine art giclée print of an original reduction woodcut. This is a printmaking technique that creates a multi-coloured image using a single wooden block, rather than separate blocks for each colour. The artist carves away portions of the block after each colour is printed, effectively reducing the block surface for each subsequent print.
To me, this print evokes an ethereal atmosphere; it feels like the end of a long summer's day, drenched in deep, rich colour, nature, and heat. You can sense the gentle texture of the water, and there is an alluring mystery to those cabins lit up on the island – Anna, Art Consultant at King & McGaw
One of my favourite artworks is the limited edition print, Country Club: Chicken Wire by celebrated British painter, Hurvin Anderson. He is known for delving into his Jamaican roots, crafting lush Caribbean landscapes that blur into abstraction, and are layered with cultural meaning.
What draws me to this print is that I am immediately attracted to the striking aesthetic and vibrant colour palette, characteristic of Anderson’s atmospheric style. But beyond that there is a kind of quiet magic in how the painting shifts and details emerge the longer you look. I also find this painting to be a powerful example of how art can simultaneously evoke emotion and provoke critical social reflection – Tyron, Director at King & McGaw
I selected a reproduction an original oil painting by my mum, Anne Rea, an artist based on the Suffolk coast. Painted on location in the south of France, it captures brightly coloured harbour buildings reflected in shimmering water, with boats in the foreground. The piece beautifully conveys the heat and light of a Mediterranean summer. You can really feel the brushstrokes and texture, bringing the energy and warmth of the scene to life – Clare, E-Commerce Manager at King & McGaw
