To mark the release of her latest exclusive collection of limited edition prints, we catch up with creative consultant, fashion designer and artist, Blue Farrier.
Learn about her fluid and intuitive style that found her illustrating the Haute Couture Runway collections for American Vogue, and how she transforms life drawing sketches into her distinct portraits.
Q: Hi Blue, it’s great to catch up. What have you been up to since we last spoke?
A: Hello K&M,
It’s been a really exciting year for me. I’ve been travelling to Italy and New York, working with fashion houses on projects that combine my art and my creative direction. I also took some time out to visit Santa Fe and Albuquerque, where I went to Georgia O’Keeffe’s studio and museum. I’ve always been fascinated by her as a woman artist as well as her style and the way she lived. Another one of the highlights of the year was illustrating the Haute Couture Runway collections for American Vogue with my sister, Jacky.
Q: You have just launched three new limited editions, published exclusively by K&M. What can you tell us about these new works, are there any stories behind them?
I’m happy to be launching 3 new limited editions with you. As you know, I’ve always loved painting with ink, and this portrait is one of my favourites. I often paint while looking at sketches from life-drawing classes, trying to keep the lines simple and fluid as possible.
The LOVE painting is a new idea for me. It ties back to my long-standing interest in calligraphy and graphics. I hope to one day travel to Japan to see traditional calligraphy in practice.
‘Seeing the finished work appear on Vogue’s Instagram and website was incredibly exciting.’

Q: As a fashion designer, your illustrations have a beautiful, flowing and original style. Can you tell us about your creative process?
I can talk a little about my way of working when I drew the runway collections for Vogue.
The process was fast and instinctive. I watched the shows, took screenshots of the looks that caught my eye, then painted them straight away, often within minutes. It wasn’t as easy as it looked! Each piece had to be painted, filmed, and sent to New York the same day. We worked like that for four days, covering a new collection each time. Seeing the finished work appear on Vogue’s Instagram and website was incredibly exciting.
Q: Is there a narrative to your portraits? Are they often people you know?
A: Sometimes they’re people I know, but mostly the portraits come from studies of the models I draw in life-drawing classes. When I paint, I need to feel a real connection with the subject and if it isn’t there, I stop and start again.
Q: What are you looking forward to for the rest of the year… and beyond?
A: I’m excited about a new fashion/art project coming out next year. I’m also looking forward to spending more time in my studio developing my practice.
Q: What do you love most about being an artist?
A: I hate it and love it, sometimes in the same hour. It makes you question all your life choices, but it’s also a part of me I’m very proud of and can’t imagine my life without it.
Thank you!
